fake fan!1! - a rant

Hello everyone! Long time no post, phew! I'm glad to be back on the blog. I've been in Bangladesh and been so so busy that I haven't really had time to write a post!

So I have a rant, hooray. (that was sarcasm by the way) I was going to do a New Years post, but I have confidence that I WILL write a post on New Years.

This is something I've wanted to talk about for so long but everyone would yell at me and call me names but now I must. I just have to.

Oh no, I'm only wearing it because their logo is cool.

I've only seen 1 movie but I still love it! The books suck though.

Oh my, they're my favorite band! My favorite song? *insert band's most popular song here* Do I know any other songs by them? *insert other popular song* No, I don't know any others.. No I don't know any of the members...

if you've heard any of these phrases before, you'll understand what I mean...

-

What is a fan? A fan is someone who enjoys a thing. And, I'm not judging you for liking a couple songs from a band and calling yourself a fan, you are. I'm judging you for doing the same thing but calling that band your favorite. It's not. Same with books, tv shows. If you barely know anything about that thing, it's not your favorite.

And don't start with the "I did it to be cool." crap. I'll like you just as much if you don't listen to that band, or haven't read that book. I'm not going to like unfriend you or anything. Acting like a certain thing is your favorite is like acting like you like a certain food or person to make your friends happy.

If you can't name all of the members of the Slug Club you cannot call yourself a Potterhead. (jk, I can't name all of the members of the Slug Club off the top of my head) But if you don't know what the Slug Club is, then you need to rethink your fan status. (jk..or not)

Why am I writing this post? To make a stand against all the people who try to be cool but aren't. All those people who wear the band shirts who don't like the band. All the people who use the word favorite for something they barely even know.

If you cannot name at least 3 albums from them, FOB isn't your favorite band ever!1! (!1! added for sarcasm) It's kind of my policy. May sound stupid, but honestly, c'mon.

I'm probably sounded like a real jerk, but honestly, I'm not the only one who feels this way I'm sure. It's just sort of annoying, no it's REALLY annoying. I'm not calling you stupid, I'm just giving you some advice. Read the book, listen to their music, look it up and thoroughly love it. Then you'll know that before it wasn't your favorite, but now it is.

That thing is great, and you're a fan of it. But it isn't your FAVORITE until you really, truly love it. And you'll know when you do. You'll get that gut feeling, that feeling of love. And that's what being in a fandom is.

So please, rethink your fandoms and ask yourself if its really your favorite. And if you find that it's not and you've been kind of faking it, ditch it, or work to make it your favorite. Ditching is okay, that thing may not be your thing.

I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, simply taking a stand, and i think speaking for a lot of people who are too scared to say it.

I hope you somewhat enjoyed and maybe got something out of it <3

Thanks for reading,
Noor

  1. Fake fans are the main reason I stepped out of the Hunger Games fandom. I couldn't take it anymore when people said it was their favorite franchise ever, yet couldn't tell Katniss and Prim apart -_-"

  2. *applauds*
thank you for being a person to say that.

honestly, i'm not gonna go out of my way and be like ohhhhh so you 'LOVE' Panic! at the disco but the only song you know is "i write sins not tragedies", huh... i mean people can call themselves whatever they want {i mean, we all know i'm an alien but i call myself a human ;)} but deep down they know they're fakes.

i think i'm definitely a FOB fangirl (American Psycho/ American Beauty, Save Rock & Roll, Under the Cork Tree...), Divergent fangirl, and P!ATD fangirl. AND elenor & park fangirl. NO WAIT, i'm a Rainbow Rowell fangirl (i mean, i love her writing so much i've read her books for//about adults) i'm also a OUAT fangirl (i mean, come here captain hook...) and let's not forget dan and phil. cat whiskers for life *peace sign*

i think i could think of more if i tried...

but i'll try not to bore you ♥

  3. Oh my yes this is perfect these people are so freaking annoying and I know it sounds unreasonably judgemental but it's true. It's like that new Star Wars movie and all the basic white girls are going on about how "brilliant" it is just to seem cooler. I wouldn't even call myself a Star Wars fan but at least I've watched enough of the first 6 movies to tell that one of the best parts of Star Wars the awakening is making fun of it and the best character dies so how "brilliant" could it possibly be!? Sorry just a random rant here but yes thank you for this post.

  4. Fantastically written Noor. I'm not a fangirl, so I can't really relate. But honestly, I don't understand what's so annoying about this. Surely people have a right to call something their favourite, I just don't get it.

  5. Also, I actually just got the idea to write a post about fake fans, but something else related XD

  6. Yes, I totally agree with this post! This happens to me a lot with Harry Potter. Somebody will tell me there a fan of it, but when I start talking to them about Harry Potter, I often discover that they have only watched the movies. Seriously, anybody who hasn't actually read the books, isn't a fan of it!

  8. Kudos to you for taking a stand, Noor. I completely agree. :) I always get so excited when I find someone from my fandoms but then I'll start talking with them realize, "This person has absolutely no clue what this book series/band/movie is really about," and it's quite frustrating. :P

  9. YES! People are always pretending that they like bands and stuff, when they're only doing it to be cool. They should just be themselves, that's cool enough.

  10. I don't really mind talking with "fake fans" because it just gives me an excuse to talk non-stop about the things I like :P Like if there's someone out there who is a fake Tokyo Ghoul fan, I'd just grab the opportunity to tell them about all the fandom theories and all my favorite characters and it's pretty nice being the one to spark interest in another person.

  11. I'm not a fan girl, so I can't really relate, but I kinda agree with Rukiya about she can't understand what's so annoying about it. I mean, maybe the word "fan" means something a little different to the people who are "fake" fans.
I also think that anybody in the WORLD should be able to wear a book/band etc T-Shirt, even if they don't know what it is. It's just a shirt! I'm sure lots of little kids would've worn Dora the Explorer underwear when they were little, and not been huge fans of it.
Anyways, great post, it was pretty interesting and fun to read!

  12. Yes!!! I hate how being nerdy, introverted and a fangirl is 'cool' People brag about being 'A introverted fangirl' and then they turn around and call me weird for obsessing over Steven Universe and not going to huge disco like parties! (They exhaust me!)

  13. I am totally obsessed with Star Wars (watched 4,5,6,1,2,3 and 7!). The other day I was talking to someone though who was going on and on about how great Star Wars was and then she said that she had only seen the Star Wars movie we'd watched at school! I mean REALLY!!!

    Great post! ;)

Hey! Yes you, you're about to leave a comment, why thank you! Just remember, if you don't have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all.
