Why Can't Boys Like Pink?

Hello everyone! So um, I have no intro so let's just get into the post :)

I was with my younger cousins today (both boys). I was playing this game on my phone and my little cousin, how about we call him S, (age 6) asked me if he could play. Of course, I handed him my phone. Then, my other cousin (let's call him K), age 10, walked in and saw him playing. He snatched the phone away and told him:

"You can't play that game! That's a girl game."

I stood there for a second and looked at him. Then, I decided to ask him what he thought a girl game was. He answered:

"Something with pink, fashion, cooking, you know girl stuff!"

So there's girl stuff? And boy stuff? I mean sure, in preschool, everyone thought that blue was for boys and pink for girls. (Of course, that's not okay either) But now? In 2015? And a kid at age 10 is thinking this?

So a little bit later at night, I asked my uncle for a toothbrush. He gave me a black and blue one. S grabbed it and said:

"That's a boy toothbrush, go ask for a pink one. You can't use this one."

But, K took it from S, gave it back to me and said to S:

"It's okay, girls can use boy stuff but boys can't use girl stuff."

Why is it okay for girls to use 'boy stuff', but boys can't use 'girl stuff'? What's the logic in that?

Why do guys get bullied for liking fashion and cooking but it's fine for girls to do so-called 'boy stuff'?

People say all kinds of things about equality, but really, the genders can't be equal until everyone thinks the same! Kids like my cousins have been brainwashed to think that pink is for girls, and blue is for boys.

Unless we stop this 'girl stuff' and 'boy stuff' crap, no one is going to be equal! What if S actually enjoyed that 'girl game' that he was playing? But he can't play it because it's for girls.

There's no such thing as 'boy stuff' and 'girl stuff'. There's just STUFF! (Unless it's clothes :P) Kids need to be taught that in preschool.

Okay sorry for the rant, I just felt that this needed to be said. Also, here's a Buzzfeed video similar to this, I found it quite interesting

What are your thoughts on this topic? I'd love to hear :)

Mkay bye,
Noor

  3. You're my favorite blogger now. xD
Personally I don't think some clothes have to be gendered either. I've got some band shirts that are supposed to be for guys but I've got no issue wearing them. Certainly everything can't be interchangeable like tank tops and etc. but it's still a partial possibility.
I really commend you on writing this. It's sad that we're brought up thinking things are so gender specific. :p

  4. THIS THOUGH THANK YOU FOR THIS
But seriously this bothers me so much. When I was little I was always told I couldn't like certain things or even wear certain things because I was a girl, and I had this friend when I was little who liked "girly" things like dresses and stuff and couldn't tell anyone because he was scared he would get teased and I felt horrible.
There really shouldn't be any such thing as "boy stuff" and "girl stuff", its all just STUFF really.
BUT THANK YOU FOR THIS THOUGH I LOVE THIS

  5. I found the cooking part funny because honestly most commercial cooks are actually male- it's males who do cooking for a job and yet it's deemed a womanly thing on the outside- maybe because women do it for free? Quite the double standards.

    1. Yeah! It's very interesting to me why people think cooking is a girl thing

  6. Yes thank you for this-- during my free time on vacation, I've been brainstorming a lot of posts, and one of them is very similar to this. ^.^

  7. It's the same way girls can wear skirts and pants, but boys can only wear pants and not skirts. I guess it's just a standard we've all grown up with. It's cool for girls to be tom-boys, but not cool for guys to be girly-girls. If anything, it's like saying boys are cooler than girls so girls can move up to act like them and be cool but boys shouldn't stoop down to our level. I don't know. It's weird and stupid and an ancient way of life and maybe we should all evolve already. I think this world really is becoming more liberal though, and we should all just go with what we want.

    1. Yeah exactly! Why can girls be like boys but boys can't be like girls? It's a mystery to me.

  9. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant! There is no need for this silly...assigning gender to objects and colours. Why is pink 'girly' and 'blue' boyish? Why are Barbie dolls for girls and cars for guys? I'm glad to see our generation is the generation of open-mindedness! :)

  12. Thanks so much for this! We're connected- I was thinking the exact same thing today. I like blue and I like pink, and so do most of my friends, so why were all my childhood toys pink and all of my guy friends' toys blue? huh? Huh? HUH? HUUHHHHHHH?

  13. Interesting...what you said is true. It's okay for guys to like pink, I have an uncle who sometimes wears a pink tee ;) and he's still very manly.

  14. I've talked to my sister about this before.
We decided it was stupid to have girly girls & tom boys then boys. So we made up bob boys and frilly boys.
    I agree with your perspective!

  15. I totally agree with you! To me, there shouldn't be "boys stuff" and "girls stuff." Why can't we just like what we like and let that be the end of it?

  17. Yeah, totally. Sometimes people can be so stupid about what girls should like and boys should like. Its even worse when people assume that girls can like trucks and cars and blue, whereas its practically a crime for boys to like pink and even cooking! Really, we live in the twenty-first century, no one cares!

  18. I think everyone could wear whatever colour they want and do whatever they want, without being judged for it. It's sad that there even are people who disagree, but raising your kids in such way is even more horrible. Let them decided what they think about it, don't force your opinion. It's really important that we speak and write about this issues. I love your post! :)

  19. Preach! I really don't see pink as a feminine color. The older generations are more skeptical about the blurred lines but I'm glad our generation is more accepting and less caring about these things. Great post ♥
